My Journey to Japan

I was born and raised in the flat, windswept landscapes of the Netherlands. However, from a young age, I felt a deep pull toward the Eastern world. As I learned more about Japan, that fascination grew stronger—until it became clear this was where I was meant to be.

In 2008, I began an adventure that would change my life—a journey into the heart of Japan. A key part of that journey was learning the Japanese language, a skill I’ve come to see as a lifelong pursuit.

From Curiosity to Passion

What started as a personal exploration soon became a deep passion for the language, nature, and cultural richness that make Japan unique. But what did I truly fall in love with? Sharing that magic with travelers.

Who Am I?

My name is Sjaak (pronounced “Shaak”), and I live in Nagano Prefecture, surrounded by the majestic Japanese Alps and endless hidden trails. Here in the countryside—far from the usual tourist routes—I’ve found the Japan most visitors never see.

As an experienced Nagano tour guide, I’ve had the privilege of leading travelers from around the world. I’ve also worked as a local guide for Vacation Races Global Adventures, an opportunity that deepened my love for showing visitors the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Japan.
